What it is

The oldest part of the city, a dense grid of narrow lanes between the cathedral and the port, with Roman walls still visible in places.

Metro Jaume I or Liceu.

When to go

Early morning is the only time it is quiet. Evenings are lively and pickpocketed.

On a student budget

Beautiful and a tourist trap in equal measure. Eat one street back from anywhere with a photographic menu; and keep your phone in a zipped pocket, which is advice everybody gives and half of arrivals ignore once.
