The Alhambra

The reason people come, and the ticket you have to plan for

What it is
A palace-and-fortress complex above the city, built by the Nasrid rulers and finished over two centuries. It is the most visited monument in Spain and the single thing your family will ask about.
Getting there
Walk up through the Cuesta de Gomérez in about half an hour, or take the C30/C32 minibus from Plaza Isabel la Católica for the price of a normal bus fare. Do not drive.
When to go
Early morning or the last slot of the afternoon. Midday in July on that hill is punishing, and the Nasrid palaces have timed entry you cannot be late for.
On a student budget
The full ticket is around €18–20 and sells out weeks ahead in spring and summer — book the moment you know your dates. There is a cheaper ticket covering the gardens and the Generalife without the Nasrid palaces, roughly half the price, which is a reasonable second visit. EU students under 25 get a reduction; bring your enrolment letter and your passport.
