What it is

One of the great collections of European painting, strongest in Spanish work from the twelfth to the twentieth century. Las Meninas alone justifies the visit.

Metro Banco de España or Atocha, both a few minutes' walk.

When to go

The last two hours before closing are free to everyone, and correspondingly busy. Go on a weekday.

On a student budget

Free in that evening window and free at any time with proof of student status in some categories — bring your enrolment letter. Two hours is enough; do not attempt the whole museum.
