Caminito del Rey

What it is

A three-kilometre boardwalk along the walls of the Gaitanes gorge, a hundred metres above the river. It was notoriously dangerous until it was rebuilt in 2015 and is now perfectly safe and still alarming.

Getting there

Train from Málaga to El Chorro takes about forty minutes; the walk is one-way with a bus back.

When to go

Spring and autumn. Book weeks ahead — entry is timed and limited.

On a student budget

Around €10 plus the train, which is the best value day out in this guide. Not for anyone who dislikes heights.
