La Malagueta and the eastern beaches

Sand within walking distance of the centre

What it is
La Malagueta is the city beach; walking east along the front leads to Pedregalejo and El Palo, old fishing quarters where the espeto — sardines grilled on a cane over a boat full of sand — is the thing to eat.
Getting there
Walk from the centre in fifteen minutes, or bus 11 along the coast.
When to go
Swimmable roughly May to November, which is longer than anywhere else on this list.
On a student budget
Free. An espeto and a beer at a chiringuito in El Palo is around €6–8 and is the local lunch rather than a tourist experience.
