Plaza Mayor

What it is

An eighteenth-century baroque square, enclosed on all four sides, widely held to be the finest in Spain. It is not a monument you visit; it is where everyone arranges to meet.

Getting there

The centre of town. Every bus route and every walk goes through it.

When to go

After dark, when the stone is lit and the temperature drops. In summer it is genuinely too hot to stand in at three in the afternoon.

On a student budget

Free, and the cafés on the square charge for the view — a coffee is roughly double what it costs one street back. Sit on the steps like the students do.
