Plaza Mayor
The living room of the city
- What it is
- An eighteenth-century baroque square, enclosed on all four sides, widely held to be the finest in Spain. It is not a monument you visit; it is where everyone arranges to meet.
- Getting there
- The centre of town. Every bus route and every walk goes through it.
- When to go
- After dark, when the stone is lit and the temperature drops. In summer it is genuinely too hot to stand in at three in the afternoon.
- On a student budget
- Free, and the cafés on the square charge for the view — a coffee is roughly double what it costs one street back. Sit on the steps like the students do.
