Biarritz and Bilbao

What it is

The French border is twenty kilometres away, so Biarritz and Bayonne are afternoon trips; Bilbao and the Guggenheim are about an hour in the other direction.

Getting there

The Euskotren narrow-gauge line to Hendaye is slow and cheap; buses to Bilbao run constantly and cost under €10.

When to go

Any time. Bilbao is a rainy city — go when the forecast is not.

On a student budget

Two countries and a world-famous museum inside an hour of your classroom is the argument for San Sebastián over somewhere cheaper.
