The Parte Vieja and pintxos
Standing up, one bar at a time
- What it is
- The old town, a compact grid of streets packed with bars, each serving pintxos — small plates on the counter, taken by hand, paid for at the end on trust.
- Getting there
- Between the bay and the river, walkable from everywhere.
- When to go
- From about eight. The custom is one or two pintxos in each bar and then move on.
- On a student budget
- The great equaliser in an expensive city: pintxos run roughly €2.50–4 each, so four bars and four glasses of txakoli is dinner for €20-odd. Watch what locals do — you take a plate, you keep count, you tell them at the end.
