Zurriola and surfing

What it is

The beach in the Gros quarter, exposed to the Atlantic and consistently the best city surf in Spain. Gros itself is where the younger, cheaper bars are.

Getting there

Cross the Kursaal bridge from the old town, five minutes.

When to go

Autumn and winter for the surf; summer for swimming, when it is calmer.

On a student budget

Board and wetsuit hire runs around €15–20 for a few hours, and several schools run beginner courses. Gros is also where to look for a room — cheaper than the centre and two minutes from it.
