Wat het is

Toledo is the old imperial capital, walled and set on a gorge; Segovia has a Roman aqueduct standing without mortar and a castle that looks invented. Either is a straightforward day out.

Er komen

Half an hour by high-speed train from Atocha or Chamartín, or slower and cheaper by bus.

Wanneer gaan

Weekdays out of season. Both are overrun on summer weekends.

Met een studentenbudget

Book the train a week ahead and it is a fraction of the walk-up fare; the bus is cheaper again and takes about an hour and a half. Go in winter — both cities are better cold and empty.
